Many People think that haryana was part of Punjab and never existed before 1966 , which is a huge Myth, as Haryana and Punjab were 2 different Entities through out the history and were merged in 1858 By British.
Due to heavy revolt in Today's region of Haryana and Delhi in 1857 revolt of independence, the British as a punishment to Delhi and Haryana merged them with Punjab Province in 1858 for the political isolation of Haryana, Delhi and western Uttarpradesh which were the centre of revolt in 1857 , by merging western Uttarpradesh in United Province and Haryana Delhi in Punjab, British ensured the dismantling of a Revolting State which was a threat to them. Before 1858 Haryana , Delhi and Western Uttarpradesh were a Single political entity. And this region was called Kuru Rastra (Kuru Mahajanapad) till 500 BCE .
Haryana (Kuru) is the 1st and oldest known Mahajanapad of Bharat.
The Kuru dynasty was formed as an alliance between the Bharata and Puru clans. The Kuru capital was Asandivat, which is now the modern Assandh in Haryana. Then eventually Hastinapur became the capital and after Mahabharat War, Delhi ( Indraprastha) became it's New capital.
Most of today's Indian Punjab was part of the Kuru Empire as at that time there was no Punjab or any Mahajanapad at Punjab.
It was Kuru Empire where on the banks of Saraswati river where Vedas were written "the most important texts of Hinduism", then it was here where multiple Puranas and Upanishads were written and lord Krishna gave the Knowledge of Bhagwat Gita during the Mahabharata war.
After fall of The kuru, Haryana became a republic from 500BCE to 400CE which is known as Yaudheya Republic and most of today's Punjab was under this Republic till 400 CE , it's capital was Today's Rohtak City of Haryana.
Then eventually jaats of Haryana formed a empire called pushyabhuti Empire which ruled most of North India till 7th century with its 1st captial as Thanesar in Haryana and then kannauj in today's western Uttarpradesh whose biggest King was Maharaja Harshvardhana .
Then from 8th century to 15th century there were multiple series of invasions in India by Islamic invaders from Arab and Central Asia due to which it became the battel field of Empires , this was also the time when Sikhism started and many parts of Northern haryana came under Jatt Sikh and Punjab started to emerge as a new region of importanc. it was the 1st time when haryana became part of any Empire centred at Punjab then eventually British conquered it and named it Delhi Province which was then merged with Punjab in 1858 , so technically haryana is a old state which was merged with Punjab only in 1858.
Then due to various sikh leaders demanding their separate state, United Punjab was divided into 3 parts - Haryana for Hindus, Punjab for sikhs and Himachal Pradesh for Pahadis .
